What you might not know is that I was a full time yoga teacher for many years and had my own yoga school with fellow teacher Jim at the Fullarton Community Centre. It is no longer in operation, however I have a tattoo of the 8 limbs of yoga in Sanskrit which runs down my spine. At the time that I finished teaching at my yoga school and then started teaching at gym’s back many years ago,I did not want to forget the following principles by which I live my life. Therefore I had them tattooed down my spine. I post these in the hope that they may also help you to be a better person.

I still practise Yoga (Ashtanga is my preferred method) and I will be going back to teaching this August. The principles below are about not lying (speaking the truth), maintaining awareness and focus on the important things in life, controlling the senses and behaving in a moral way each day.

I’ll be back to update this blog with a report on the latest Living Beauty fitness show The INBA Classic held last Saturday and some photos but in the meantime visit my facebook if you want to see the new photos of my clients click here

What are the 8 limbs of yoga?

The practice of yoga is an art and science dedicated to creating union between body, mind and spirit. This art of right living was perfected and practiced in India thousands of years ago and the foundations of yoga philosophy were written down in The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, approximately 200 AD. This sacred text describes the inner workings of the mind and provides an eight-step blueprint for controlling its restlessness so as to enjoying lasting peace.

The eight limbs are as follows:

Yama : Universal morality
Niyama : Personal observances
Asanas : Body postures
Pranayama : Breathing exercises, and control of prana
Pratyahara : Control of the senses
Dharana : Concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness
Dhyana : Devotion, Meditation on the Divine
Samadhi : Union with the Divine

Yamas and niyamas are the suggestions given on how we should deal with people around us and our attitude toward ourselves. The attitude we have toward things and people outside ourselves is yama, how we relate to ourselves inwardly is niyama. Both are mostly concerned with how we use our energy in relationship to others and to ourselves.

The yamas are broken down into five “wise characteristics.” Rather than a list of dos and don’ts, “they tell us that our fundamental nature is compassionate, generous, honest and peaceful.” They are as follows:

I. Yamas (Universal Morality)

1. Ahimsa – Compassion for all living things
The word ahimsa literally means not to injure or show cruelty to any creature or any person in any way whatsoever. Ahimsa is, however, more than just lack of violence as adapted in yoga. It means kindness, friendliness, and thoughtful consideration of other people and things. It also has to do with our duties and responsibilities too. Ahimsa implies that in every situation we should adopt a considerate attitude and do no harm.

2. Satya – Commitment to Truthfulness
Satya means “to speak the truth,” yet it is not always desirable to speak the truth on all occasions, for it could harm someone unnecessarily. We have to consider what we say, how we say it, and in what way it could affect others. If speaking the truth has negative consequences for another, then it is better to say nothing.

3. Asteya – Non-stealing
Steya means “to steal”; asteya is the opposite-to take nothing that does not belong to us. This also means that if we are in a situation where someone entrusts something to us or confides in us, we do not take advantage of him or her. Non-stealing includes not only taking what belongs to another without permission, but also using something for a different purpose to that intended, or beyond the time permitted by its owner.

4. Brahmacharya – Sense control
Brahmacharya is used mostly in the sense of abstinence, particularly in relationship to sexual activity. Brahmacharya suggests that we should form relationships that foster our understanding of the highest truths. Brahmacharya does not necessarily imply celibacy. Rather, it means responsible behavior with respect to our goal of moving toward the truth. Practicing brahmacharya means that we use our sexual energy to regenerate our connection to our spiritual self. It also means that we don’t use this energy in any way that might harm others.

5. Aparigraha – Neutralising the desire to acquire and hoard wealth
Aparigraha means to take only what is necessary, and not to take advantage of a situation or act greedy. We should only take what we have earned; if we take more, we are exploiting someone else.

II. Niyama (Personal Observances)

Niyama means “rules” or “laws.” These are the rules prescribed for personal observance. Like the yamas, the five niyamas are not exercises or actions to be simply studied. They represent far more than an attitude. Compared with the yamas, the niyamas are more intimate and personal. They refer to the attitude we adopt toward ourselves as we create a code for living soulfully.

1. Sauca – Purity
The first niyama is sauca, meaning purity and cleanliness. Sauca has both an inner and an outer aspect. Outer cleanliness simply means keeping ourselves clean. Inner cleanliness has as much to do with the healthy, free functioning of our bodily organs as with the clarity of our mind. Practicing asanas or pranayama are essential means for attending to this inner sauca. Asanas tones the entire body and removes toxins while pranayama cleanses our lungs, oxygenates our blood and purifies our nerves. “But more important than the physical cleansing of the body is the cleansing of the mind of its disturbing emotions like hatred, passion, anger, lust, greed, delusion and pride.”

2. Santosa – Contentment
Another niyama is santosa, modesty and the feeling of being content with what we have. To be at peace within and content with one’s lifestyle finding contentment even while experiencing life’s difficulties for life becomes a process of growth through all kinds of circumstances. We should accept that there is a purpose for everything – yoga calls it karma – and we cultivate contentment ‘to accept what happens’. It means being happy with what we have rather than being unhappy about what we don’t have.

3. Tapas – Disciplined use of our energy
Tapas refers to the activity of keeping the body fit or to confront and handle the inner urges without outer show. Literally it means to heat the body and, by so doing, to cleanse it. Behind the notion of tapas lies the idea we can direct our energy to enthusiastically engage life and achieve our ultimate goal of creating union with the Divine. Tapas helps us burn up all the desires that stand in our way of this goal. Another form of tapas is paying attention to what we eat. Attention to body posture, attention to eating habits, attention to breathing patterns – these are all tapas.

4. Svadhyaya – Self study
The fourth niyama is svadhyaya. Sva means “self’ adhyaya means “inquiry” or “examination”. Any activity that cultivates self-reflective consciousness can be considered svadhyaya. It means to intentionally find self-awareness in all our activities and efforts, even to the point of welcoming and accepting our limitations. It teaches us to be centered and non-reactive to the dualities, to burn out unwanted and self-destructive tendencies.

5. Isvarapranidhana – Celebration of the Spiritual
The practice requires that we set aside some time each day to recognize that there is some omnipresent force larger than ourselves that is guiding and directing the course of our lives.

III. Asanas (Body postures)
Asana is the practice of physical postures. It is the most commonly known aspect of yoga for those unfamiliar with the other seven limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. The practice of moving the body into postures has widespread benefits; of these the most underlying are improved health, strength, balance and flexibility. On a deeper level the practice of asana, which means “staying” or “abiding” in Sanskrit, is used as a tool to calm the mind and move into the inner essence of being. The challenge of poses offers the practitioner the opportunity to explore and control all aspects of their emotions, concentration, intent, faith, and unity between the physical and the ethereal body.

As one practices asana it fosters a quieting of the mind, thus it becomes both a preparation for meditation and a meditation sufficient in and of itself. Releasing to the flow and inner strength that one develops brings about a profound grounding spirituality in the body.

IV. Pranayama (Breath Control)

Pranayama is the measuring, control, and directing of the breath. Pranayama controls the energy (prana) within the organism, in order to restore and maintain health and to promote evolution.

Pranayama, or breathing technique, is very important in yoga. It goes hand in hand with the asana or pose. As the yogi follows the proper rhythmic patterns of slow deep breathing “the patterns strengthen the respiratory system, soothe the nervous system and reduce craving. As desires and cravings diminish, the mind is set free and becomes a fit vehicle for concentration.”

V. Pratyahara (Control of the Senses)

Pratyahara means drawing back or retreat. The word ahara means “nourishment”; pratyahara translates as “to withdraw oneself from that which nourishes the senses.” In yoga, the term pratyahara implies withdrawal of the senses from attachment to external objects. It can then be seen as the practice of non-attachment to sensorial distractions as we constantly return to the path of self realization and achievement of internal peace. It means our senses stop living off the things that stimulate; the senses no longer depend on these stimulants and are not fed by them any more.

Pratyahara occurs almost automatically when we meditate because we are so absorbed in the object of meditation. Precisely because the mind is so focused, the senses follow it; it is not happening the other way around. No longer functioning in their usual manner, the senses become extraordinarily sharp. Under normal circumstances the senses become our masters rather than being our servants. The senses entice us to develop cravings for all sorts of things. In pratyahara the opposite occurs: when we have to eat we eat, but not because we have a craving for food. In pratyahara we try to put the senses in their proper place, but not cut them out of our actions entirely.

Much of our emotional imbalance are our own creation. A person who is influenced by outside events and sensations can never achieve the inner peace and tranquility. This is because he or she will waste much mental and physical energy in trying to suppress unwanted sensations and to heighten other sensations. This will eventually result in a physical or mental imbalance, and will, in most instances, result in illness.

Patanjali says that the above process is at the root of human unhappiness and uneasiness. When people seek out yoga, hoping to find that inner peace which is so evasive, they find that it was theirs all along. In a sense, yoga is nothing more than a process which enables us to stop and look at the processes of our own minds.

VI. Dharana (Concentration and cultivating inner perceptual awareness)

Dharana means “immovable concentration of the mind”. The essential idea is to hold the concentration or focus of attention in one direction.

The objective in dharana is to steady the mind by focusing its attention upon some stable entity. B.K.S. Iyengar states that the objective is to achieve the mental state where the mind, intellect, and ego are “all restrained and all these faculties are offered to the Lord for His use and in His service. Here there is no feeling of ‘I’ and ‘mine’.

VII. Dhyana (Devotion , Meditation on the Divine)

Dhyana means worship, or profound and abstract religious meditation. It is perfect contemplation. It involves concentration upon a point of focus with the intention of knowing the truth about it. The concept holds that when one focuses their mind in concentration on an object the mind is transformed into the shape of the object.

Meditation becomes our tool to see things clearly and perceive reality beyond the illusions that cloud our mind.

VIII. Samadhi (Union with the Divine)

The final step in the eight-fold path of Yoga is the attainment of Samadhi. Samadhi means “to bring together, to merge.” In the state of samadhi the body and senses are at rest, as if asleep, yet the faculty of mind and reason are alert, as if awake; one goes beyond consciousness. During samadhi, we realise what it is to be an identity without differences, and how a liberated soul can enjoy pure awareness of this pure identity. The conscious mind drops back into that unconscious oblivion from which it first emerged.

The mind and the intellect have stopped and there is only the experience of consciousness, truth and unutterable joy. The achievement of samadhi is a difficult task. For this reason the Yoga Sutra suggests the practice of asanas and pranayama as preparation for dharana.

These eight steps of yoga indicate a logical pathway that leads to the attainment of physical, ethical, emotional, and psycho-spiritual health. Yoga does not seek to change the individual; rather, it allows the natural state of total health and integration in each of us to become a reality.

Last night was a great night with three Living Beauty Sports Models taking the stage. Fatima Ingles, Leah Mills and Amber Thompson all looked stunning but most importantly their attitude and stage presence was a credit to their preparation over the last 5 months. It takes up to 20 weeks to prepare for a competition and when it is done slowly the best results are obtained.

Thank you to Assistant Coach Gemma Dawson and previous Living Beauty Ruth Hock for cheering in the audience, Josie Caruso and Bec Rosewall for helping backstage.

Here are some photos of the night.

Sta tuned in two weeks for the INBA show at the Norwood townhall on 12th May, hope to see you there.

Love and Light

I have been attending yoga retreats and have been a fitness trainer for many years, but the question I always asked is how do you make that “just back from a retreat” feeling last? Well I believe I have found it with Juice Revolution as they bring cleansing to you!
Whether you are at home or at work, you can complete a cleanse program as the fresh juices are delivered to your door ready to go.

According to the book “Juicing, Fasting and Cleansing for Life” by Cherie Calbom, when you complete a juice cleanse you’ll have changed your internal environment. You will feel lighter, healthier and happier. You will have more energy to enjoy each and every day. And will have the best chance of preventing common and even serious illnesses.

So with this in mind and knowing that juicing enhances the ability of the body to repair at a cellular level and rejuvenate the digestive system, I jumped on line and ordered.
This was my second juice cleanse with Juice Revolution. The convenience of having six nutrient packed juices delivered to my door is fabulous, as is the knowledge that Juice Revolution product is organic and fresh.

The email support is great during the JR cleanse as I was reminded prior to my cleanse what is required to prepare my body, starting by removing animal products from my diet.

Day one of my JR cleanse was Easter Saturday and I awoke to a mug of hot water and lemon with my dairy free probiotic. My day started with my husband driving us to the Willunga Farmers Markets and so I drank Juice 1 in the car, a refreshing blend of spinach, celery, apple, mint and lemon. I love greens and so I chose the “Deep” cleanse package of juices.

At the markets I bought Kale, Spinach, Celery and a few other fresh ingredients because the post cleanse day is always comprised of loads of fresh veggies and fruit.
Juice two was also based on greens and I also drank some pure filtered water and coconut water after I finished this juice to stay hydrated. After the markets we went for morning tea at a café, where I had a peppermint tea but was starting to feel really cold.

Upon getting back home I wrapped myself in a quilt for a 20 minute power nap. Juices three and four were easy as I was into the mood of cleansing and feeling a bit lethargic but mainly because it was a day off and I just let myself rest mentally and physically. Juice four consists of lemon, cayenne pepper and agave nectar and I really liked this.

Juice five and six were the best as I knew I had finished the day and I would feel amazing the next day when I awoke and for the remainder of the long weekend. Juice six is almond milk with cinnamon, vanilla bean and agave nectar and is my favourite.

The day after the cleanse I woke up and had the best work out at the gym. My stomach was flatter and I had a lot of energy. As I only did the one day cleanse I did integrate a range of foods in straight away, but kept it clean with foods such as kale, banana, quinoa and white fish.

I view cleansing as a way of life. I live and breathe fitness and can attest that juicing will help you feel and look alive and vibrant each and every day. I continue to incorporate a range of fresh juices into my daily regime. I eat a lot of raw vegetables and consume at least 3-4 litres of water each day. This helps me to train hard and set an example for the clients I work with at my business Living Beauty.

I recommend cleansing to anyone wanting to feel happy energetic and light. Living Beauty also offers a cleanse plan for $99 and you may choose a Juice Cleanse or Food based cleanse. So if you want to cleanse several times a year you now have the option of a Living Beauty cleanse where you prep everything yourself……..OR Alternatively – choose an SA Made cleanse Product of fresh juices By Juice Revolution delivered to your door. See www.juicerevolution.com.au for prices and packages.

Last weekend I attended Fit X Sports Expo in Melbourne. It was great to travel over with past Living Beauty athletes Sasha and Ali (from 2010 and 2011 competition season). We went over to support Living Beauty Assistant Coach Gemma Dawson. Gemma competed in the IFBB Bikini Division and looked absolutely gorgeous, a picture of glowing health and she also presented a very lean and shapely muscle structure. Her presentation was flawless and her confidence and stage presence a joy to watch. Gemma has shared the following photo, well done and congratulations on achieving another goal!

Preparation and planning are essential for an athletes confidence. Setting personal, achievable and positive goals helps build confidence as does preparing thoroughly for training, competition and the unexpected.
What causes worry and anxiety in individuals is fear of the unknown. “Future worry” causes people a lot of undue stress. In sport it can ruin a golden sporting moment.
Here are some tips:
• Don’t wait to feel confident, create confidence
• Planning and preparation lead to confidence
• Confidence is a frame of mind that enables you to confront any challenge enthusiastically and without a fear of failure
• Choose the best response in every situation
• Prepare for the unexpected
• Leaving things to the last minute creates worry and doubt
• Focus on what you want to happen
• Focus in your strengths
• Mental imagery can improve athletic performance without any additional physical training, practise visualising your competition day and what you want to happen
• Mental imagery build confidence as we mentally see and experience success

CONFIDENCE is your secret weapon on stage! You can have the best meal plan and training program but you must be confident and SMILE on stage!
I have been feeling creative lately and today want to share with you my Pancake recipe for those who requested it.

How do we get great abs? Sometimes we all need a little kickstart and therefore I recommend the Living Beauty Cleanse Plan.

My core values lie in making a positive impact on the lives of other women. I aim to use the lessons I have learned over my 15 years spent in the fitness industry to help others to have an easier journey to find health and fitness. Living Beauty exists for this purpose.
There is so much focus on what to eat and diet dilemma’s but what you may not realise is that having a good digestive system is a vital part to “toning up” and “losing weight”.
To get lean and stay lean you should commit to a healthy lifestyle. Forget the fad diets and clear yourself of can’t.
I have put together the Living Beauty Cleanse program with this in mind. This is a tried and tested program which will leave your cells bursting with nutrients and energy. Your eyes will be brighter, your skin will glow and you will literally leap out of bed each morning with energy!
The plan lasts for two days so it is easy to stick to. There is a little bit of walking and stretching involved but nothing strenuous. You need a juicer, fresh fruits and vegetables and time to prepare the juices and recipes. The program is best done on two consecutive days off and I normally do this plan over a weekend.
If you want a cleanse you can trust, something that will uplift and rejuvenate your body and kick start your cell renewal then contact Amelia today!
The investment is $99. To purchase just email Amelia today! amelia@livingbeauty.com.au

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of Bec and Michael. Bec did a 12 week Living Beauty “Ultimate Bride Body” plan and you can see in this photo she looked simply amazing. Congratulations Bec and Michael.

Had a bad week? not done your training? too busy?
The most common question I get is how do you do it? Well here is a breakdown of my week including a few tips to help you to make positive changes in your life.

I am not going to bore you with the work stuff so I am only including things in my day and times to indicate how I use small “windows” of the day to get things done to LIVE LEAN & HEALTHY, not just when competing in Sports Model but all year round!!!

Monday
6am – wake up and meal prep for my day including breakfast with daily supplements, prep meals for work (gym bag packed the night before)
9am – Met with my boss.
12noon – lunchtime appointment with chiro (for maintaining spinal alignment)
1pm – 5:30pm – crazy pace at work as Marketing Manager
6:15pm – Training weights at the gym
7:30pm – eat dinner, meal prep for next day, pack gym bag for next day, I also help my husband with some of his meal prep for the next day and do a couple of loads of washing
Tuesday
6am – wake up and get ready for work
12noon – Meeting with Assistant Coach Gemma Dawson to discuss her LB clients progress
6:30pm – cardio training, home dinner, unpack, re-pack …you get the idea!
Wednesday
6am – gym – weights
7am – grocery top up – lean protein, just from coles (yes they sell organic chicken and eggs and are open convenient times)
7:30am – first meeting at work
9:15am – photo shoot for work
1pm- shopping in my lunch break
5:30pm – sports massage
6:30pm – home, 2 loads washing, meal prep for a few days in advance
Thursday
6am – Train at gym – weights
9am – meeting externally, running a bit late so had the iPad out and my assistant signing off print jobs of brochures and flyers whilst we are driving along
More meetings at work and it seemed like a million emails
12:30 – met mum for a quick 30 min peppermint tea
1:00 – back at work til 5pm crazy pace, meetings, deadlines, general stress and working at 100 miles an hour
4:30pm – all s…it hit the fan at work – daily grind, heated discussions, eventually sorted it out!!
6pm – hair dresser and catch up with client Kelly, a LB client and bride to be – she was there at the same time as me coincidently. Plan out and write notes for a session I have with two girls on Sunday to help them with comp prep.
Always in bed by 10:30
Friday
7:15am at work – so much to do, I have to get in early
Parked in the wrong car park, got yelled at …great start to the day!
9am – Meetings back to back
12noon – meet my best friend at the gym for a lunch time workout
1pm – 5pm – work
5pm – grocery top up – organic vegies and supplies from the market
6pm – Answer Living Beauty emails

Each day is different and I am always helping Living Beauty clients every day and also at night but I try to limit computer usage and any facebook “surfing” prior to bed and I relax by reading so I can sleep well.

Have a good week and just enjoy life for the beauty in each day!

Love and Light

The weather has been gorgeous and hot! Such a great way to start the year off. Busy as ever Living Beauty girls are getting leaner and feeling more energetic each week. Gemma and I have had quite a few new girls starting and their progress is fantastic. I really am priviledged to be able to help girls understand how to train and eat to get the body of their dreams. No starvation here! Just nutrient dense meal plans to give vitality, health and the best muscle structure. A better version of you! Oh and dont forget we are also kicking butt at the gym with a good weights plan to tone the body and give the muscular look of a Sports Model, not a bodybuilder! Love lifting weights!

As promised here is a great Summer Salad Recipe! Great for an Australia Day BBQ!

Living Beauty Raw Summer Salad

Ingredients

I use all organic or low spray veggies and a few that are extra yummy from my garden.
2 carrots, 2 large handfuls fresh spinach, 1 large or 2 small cucumber. Fresh herbs basil, parsley, mint to your own taste.

Dressing

1 red capsicum, 1 cup olive oil, 1 tsp fresh chilli, 2-4tbsp fresh lime/lemon juice, 2 tbsp ACV (Apple cider vinegar), 3 tbsp wheat free tamari sauce, 1.5 tbsp agave, 2 cm fresh ginger, 1 tsp curry powder, 1 tbsp fresh coriander, ½ tsp Himalayan salt.

Salad Method

I pulsed the raw vegies only twice in thermomix to chop them coarsely. Then arranged them on a white salad platter for high colour and a fresh look. Choose a good setting on your food processor that gives a fine consistency or chop by hand.

Dressing method

In thermomix or food processor, start with fresh herbs and ginger and chop finely, then add all other ingredients and mix well.
Add dressing just prior to serving this crunchy, nutrient dense salad!
I had half the dressing left over and it keeps for a few days in an airtight glass jar in the fridge.

Happy Australia Day for Thursday! Im heading to the beach with my Esky full of yummy salads and will be likely to throw some fish on the barbie! How Aussie!!

Sometimes Christmas is not all Love and Light! For those who have family members that are badly behaved, argumentative, negative or simply so stressed in their own life that they take it out on others, there is a way to overcome it. You might have also lost a close friend or family member this year and it could be the first Christmas without them which can be
hard to accept.

A great tool for thinking positively is to sit quietly first thing when you wake up and write down 5 things you are thankful for. Gratitude lists are very trendy these days, but they are amazing! You don’t have to write an essay, just spend 5 minutes. This list is very personal, so just keep it to yourself. Place the note somewhere you will have access to consult it when you feel annoyed or down (e.g. your purse, your bedside table drawer?). And when needed, just give it a quick read over. You will be pleasantly surprised how this can change your mood.

Did you know that so much of what is reflected in our outside body starts with the mind. So if you can work on the inside then quite often the body will follow. Living beauty…from the inside out!

Gemma and I had a great catch up this week and reiterated our commitment to work hard for our clients in 2012! It is going to be a big year ahead Living Beauty girls will be doing it with LOVE!

If you want to book in to train with us 2012 spaces are filling fast! Remember we train no more than a handful of clients at any one time. This guarantees exceptional customer service and a genuinely unique program which is just for you and is updated regularly! Just ask our happy clients and read the testimonials with photos posted this week, click here to see the girls amazing stories!

Love and Light to all this holiday season! Get outdoors and enjoy this glorious weather.

A few of the Living Beauty girls have asked my advice about how to tackle clean eating and maintaining a lean body during the festive season.
I have already obtained holiday timetables of the gyms where I train and I will schedule a minimum of three weights workouts per week (when the gym is open) and then do simple cardio like walking outdoors to enjoy the summer sun!
My Christmas day normally looks like this: Wake up and eat my normal breakfast, followed by a walk with my husband either around my local area or at the beach. I might throw in some stair runs, push ups or tricep dips depending on if I am at the local park or beach. I will eat with awareness of how full I am during the several family events we have. I won’t restrict myself and will try a little bit of most dishes including dessert. As long as I eat until satisfied but not overly full I feel great. Of course for me having so many food intolerances (wheat, gluten, dairy, fodmaps) I choose the foods that don’t aggravate. I certainly don’t deprive myself or eat like a bird. Christmas Day is fun and a time to socialise and share foods with loved ones.
I look at recipe books and adapt recipes into healthy treats. This year I will be bringing my raw avocado lime pie to my parent’s house and then my raw chocolate balls to my in laws for dessert. I don’t rave on about the recipe and how it is healthy …as I have found that just by bringing it and placing on the table for people to try they will make up their own minds and most people don’t even know the difference and like it just as much as a sugary fat laden cake.
I don’t like “crazy nut case” behaviour around food it is not a good look and most of your family and friends will just get annoyed. I don’t make a big deal about my food choices or draw attention to myself and most of the time I load my plate up with so much that no one says anything. I eat much more in volume of food than those who are overweight because my metabolism is working effectively. Most of my plate will be veggies and then lean protein – it really is so easy!
And although I am not a drinker if there is some French champagne on offer I won’t say no to a glass, but after that I will finish the day with lots of water.
